a little bit about

Tara Lilly

Tara grew up on family farmland in rural Northern California surrounded by the redwood forest, open meadows, and the melodic sounds of birds singing. She has always had a love for nature, and it is one of her biggest inspirations. As a child, she loved to pick wildflowers, forage for blackberries, and admire wild mushrooms beneath the redwood trees.

In addition to her love of nature, Tara is inspired by folk art, antique textiles, mid century design, and her family. She loves to paint everything floral, draw charming characters, and explore color. Her illustrations are found on fabric, apparel, games, home and garden decor, and a variety of paper goods.

"Maybe it's the blooms and bugs in my home garden, or something silly my children say, or flipping through books and magazines, there is always something there that pops an idea into my head."

What do you think of when you hear the word “whimsy?”

When I hear the word whimsy, I visualize art that has a bright, sweet, nostalgic vibe with lots of playfulness throughout.

When do you feel the most inspired?

Inspiration comes from everything I surround myself with. I am often always inspired. Maybe it's the blooms and bugs in my home garden, or something silly my children say, or flipping through books and magazines, there is always something there that pops an idea into my head. I love to walk in nature and collect bits of plants and wildflowers growing, nature is a great source of inspiration for me.

Your illustrations are so intricate and playful. How did you find your style of art?

My art style has evolved over the years.  I have a background in Graphic Design and Product Development and after years of working digitally, I decided I wanted to get further away from the screen and do more painting and drawing and more analog work.  I discovered I loved painting and so began painting things that I loved or objects I enjoyed looking at. Now I use the computer as little as possible and paint as much as time will allow.

What do you hope people feel while surrounded by your illustrations on their walls?

I hope that when people are surrounded by my artwork on their walls, they feel a sense of pure joy and happiness. I hope they will smile every time they walk into the room.
